'Unstable' Ice Affecting Nearly 25% of Western Antarctica
'Unstable' Ice Affecting Nearly 25% of Western Antarctica The news comes from a recent study released in 'Geophysical Research Letters.' University of Leeds scientist Andy Shepherd, leader of the report, says some areas have thinned out in huge quantities. According to the study, these amounts are as much as 400 feet. Andy Shepherd, via 'The Guardian' Because of climate change, the study goes on to say that hotter ocean water is melting glaciers from below. The ice itself becomes unstable due to it melting at a faster rate than when snow increases its mass. Andy Shepherd, via 'The Guardian' Shepherd adds that ice loss in Antarctica has raised worldwide sea levels by 1/5 of an inch in nearly the last 30 years.
