Ohio State Tops First College Football Playoff Ranking. It's the Buckeyes first No. 1 ranking in the College Football Playoff era, which began in 2014. No. 2 LSU and No. 3 Alabama will face each other on Saturday in Tuscaloosa. Penn State was No. 4 in the initial rankings. one spot ahead of defending national champion Clemson at No. 5. Besides the top 5, No. 17 Minnesota, who will play Penn State on Saturday. and No. 12 Baylor are the only other remaining undefeated teams in the rankings.
