Hudson CEO on Holiday Travel, Strength of the Consumer and Technology
Hudson visited the floor of the New York Stock Exchange after the company rebranded itself. CEO Roger Fordyce talked to TheStreet about the company's rebrand, holiday travel, the impact from the Boeing 737 being grounded and his advice for traveling during the holidays. His advice? It's pretty simple. "Be patient," said Fordyce. Let's talk about the Boeing 737 groundings. In Hudson's last earnings report, Fordyce noted, "During the third quarter, we continued to face macroeconomic pressures to our duty-free operations. In addition, we experienced travel disruptions due ot Hurricane Dorian and the continued 737 MAX groundings that temporarily impacted our duty-paid business." But, why exactly did the MAX groundings impact the airport retailer? "So the big issue, particularly during the summer months, is the lack of the airline capacity and taking all those aircraft out of the airlines really just tightened up the amount of capacity and the passenger growth that was capable. It didn't impact every market, but it did impact the airlines that were impacted by the groundings," Fordyce told TheStreet. And, looking at a hypothetical situation, what if Amazon decided to place Amazon Go stores in airports, how would that impact Hudson? "So from a competition point of view, it would be really just us another day of business. Obviously transactional capabilities are extremely important to us and we're looking...at all the technology and the capabilities that we need to be able to compete with that sort of technology," said Fordyce.
