Street Near White House Renamed 'Black Lives Matter Plaza' The order was made by Mayor Muriel Bowser, who also had a 50-foot "BLACK LIVES MATTER" mural made near Lafayette Park. Smoke canisters and pepper spray were used to disperse the crowd for what critics called a "photo-op." Bowser said the president's actions were "shameful," and she has asked for military presence to leave the nation's capital.
