Happy New Year! As we head into 2019, it seems that there’s no slowing down the steady stream of world news, with a number of big stories having already pierced their way into headlines this week. Here’s our take on a first weekly digest of news for the year – will the following stories set trends for weeks to come?

Pelosi Elected Speaker of the House
As the Democrats settle into their new role as majority overseers of the US House of Representatives, they have elected Nancy Pelosi as their speaker – who is already reportedly set to butt heads with President Trump over a number of issues. With the President’s partial government shutdown continuing to persist, it will remain to be seen as to whether or not any breakthroughs can be sought.

…and the Democrats Take Further Action
In any case, 2019 could set to be a very different year for Donald Trump in a number of ways. For one, the House of Representatives has already voted to end the ongoing partial shutdown, which the President may veto in due course (no action has been taken at the time of writing). Trump, however, has outright stated that if any measures proposed do not offer the White House the $5 billion it demands for its proposed border wall with Mexico to be built, he will outright reject them. How long will this go on for?

‘Bird Box’ Inspires a New, Deadly Craze
Last year, people ate Tide pods as part of a potentially-fatal online ‘challenge’. This year, apparently inspired by recent Netflix hit ‘Bird Box’, starring Sandra Bullock, certain videomakers are taking to blindfolding themselves while doing everyday chores – which, as you can imagine, is likely to be extremely dangerous. Netflix US has taken to warning viewers against the challenges.

Thailand Hit by Worst Storms in 30 Years
Trends in 2018 for tropical disasters appear to be emerging once again early into 2019, with reports making global press stating that popular tourist resorts towards the south of Thailand are being subject to an intense storm known as Pabuk – and its strength and potential devastation could be the worst that the country has witnessed in three decades. People are being advised to stay indoors – and several airports are remaining closed until the all-clear has been heralded.
