Hundreds of protesters calling for action against climate change marched in London and poured buckets of fake blood outside the British Prime Minister's official residence on Saturday (March 9).

Protesters with the Extinction Rebellion group poured over 200 litres of the red liquid outside the gates of Downing Street.

The fake blood, made from syrup and food colouring, was used to symbolise "the reality of our children's futures", according to the group's website.

Larch Maxey, a climate change activist with Extinction Rebellion, told Reuters the group hoped the stunt would force the government into action.

Last December, Britain said it is willing to host United Nations climate talks in 2020 as it seeks to establish a lead role in the fight against global warming after it leaves the European Union.

The host will be decided this year, with Italy having also expressed an interest.
