Iran's president said Monday (March 18) his government will file a legal case in Iran against U.S. officials who imposed sanctions on the country.

Speaking on state television, Hassan Rouhani said if the court rules in Iran's favor, the government would pursue the lawsuit in international courts.

Rouhani said U.S. sanctions had created difficulties, including a weaker currency that has fed into higher inflation.

The United States reimposed sanctions on Tehran after U.S. President Donald Trump decided to abandon Iran's 2015 nuclear accord last May.

A deal which had been negotiated with five other world powers to lift international sanctions against Iran in exchange for Iran reigning in its nuclear missile program.

Iranian complaints about sanctions have occasionally succeeded in international courts.

In a small victory for Tehran in October, judges at the International Court of Justice ordered the U.S to make sure sanctions don't affect humanitarian aid or civil aviation safety.

Iran sees U.S. sanctions as an attempt to overthrow the government and usher in one more aligned with U.S. policies.

On Monday the rial was almost three times weaker against the dollar than a year ago on the unofficial market.
