U.S. Senators Complain Of Slowed Sanctions On North Korea

Two senior U.S. senators criticized the Trump administration on Monday for slowing the pace of sanctions on North Korea.

Reuters reports Republican Cory Gardner and Democrat Ed Markey called for a recommitment to strong sanctions on North Korea in a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

In the letter, the senators said the pace of sanctions had โ€œslowed considerablyโ€ in the past year.

They cited records that showed the Trump administration had sanctioned 182 persons and entities for North Korea sanctions violations since March 31, 2017, but only 26 since Feb.

23, 2018.

U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met for a second summit last month, but talks allegedly broke down over conflicting demands for sanctions relief and denuclearization.
