New Zealand's Jacinda Ardern to Ban All Semiautomatic Weapons The announcement from Ardern comes after a mass shooting in the city of Christchurch on March 15.

A lone gunman attacked two mosques, killing 50 people.

Authorities say the five guns he used were all purchased legally.

Once approved, the ban will then go into effect on April 11.

Jacinda Ardern, via press conference Only 4% of firearms in New Zealand are registered.

Currently, there are up to 1.5 million guns within the country.

GunPolicy.org, via 'The New York Times' Ardern says gun owners who do turn in their weapons will be fairly compensated.
