Amid the fallout of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 grounding, Southwest Airlines said it would be keeping its Max 8s off its schedules through May.

Initially, the U.S. carrier said the planes wouldn't be flying through April 20th.

But in a memo sent out Friday, the company said extending the groundings through May would help reduce last minute flight cancellations and trip disruptions.

Earlier this week, Southwest said it has canceled 2,800 flights since the Federal Aviation Administration ordered all U.S. airlines to ground the 737 MAX.

The top selling Boeing jetliner has been grounded worldwide after the model was involved in two deadly crashes.

One in Indonesia last October and another in Ethiopia in early March.

Reuters has learned that an anti-stall system at the center of a probe in the Indonesia crash was also at play when the same model aircraft crashed in Ethiopia.

Sources told Reuters that data pulled from the Ethiopian plane's black boxes suggest the system, which pushes the nose of the jet downwards, had been activated before the jet ploughed into a field, killing all 157 people on board.

Officials told Reuters that a preliminary report of the probe into the Ethiopian crash will be ready as early as next week.
