Former NBA All-Star Porzingis accused of rape: attorney

A lawyer for former NBA All-Star Kristaps Porzingis confirmed the professional basketball player has been accused of rape.

The attorney for the 7-foot-3 Latvian on Sunday issued a statement after the New York Post reported the allegation, made by a woman the newspaper said was once Porzingis's neighbor in a luxury Manhattan high-rise.

Citing police sources, the Post said investigators believed the accusation was credible.

Porzingis's attorney on Sunday told a different story: The sex was consensual, and they believed the woman was trying to extort money from the former New York Knick.

In a statement, his counsel said, “we made a formal referral to federal law enforcement on December 20th, 2018, based on the accusers’ extortionate demands.” Porzingis was drafted by the Knicks as a rookie in 2015, and earned a spot on the All-Star team last season.

But he tore his ACL partway through 2018, and is still recovering.

In January, New York traded him to Dallas.

In a statement, his attorney said the National Basketball Association was made aware of the rape allegation months ago, before he joined the Mavericks.
