Trump's border closure threat looms over aid cut

The Trump administration says the threat to close U.S. border entry points overrun by asylum seekers is real, a day after the U.S. government cut funding to Central American countries.

Trump's border closure threat looms over aid cut

The Trump administration on Sunday doubled down on its threat to close entry points at the southern U.S. border with Mexico.

White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway said the threat wasn't a quote "bluff" and acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney said President Trump's intention should be taken at face value.

This, a day after the U.S. government cut aid to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

Trump has blasted those nations for having quote "set up" migrant caravans and sent them north.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAYING: "There's a very good likelihood that i'll be closing the border next week, and that will be just fine with me." Trump told reporters Friday he was considering the action as his government struggles to deal with a surge of asylum seekers from Central America who travel through Mexico, if Mexico does not stop unauthorized immigrants from reaching the United States.

Over the weekend, migrants were seen kept inside a chain-link enclosure under a bridge in El Paso, Texas.

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders called for a 'humanitarian' approach on CBS Face the Nation.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE BERNIE SANDERS SAYING: "It's totally absurd... what we need to do, of course, is A, comprehensive immigration reform... you need a human, humanitarian policy at the border." While Republican Florida Senator Rick Scott blamed Democrats for not spending big bucks on border security.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) REPUBLICAN FLORIDA GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT SAYING: "We have a crisis.

We need more barriers, so we have operational control, we need more people, and we need more technology... and the Democrats don't want to give any more money for border security, that's wrong." While Trump has said he'd close the border before in his two years in office, concern is rising among students and business commuters at entry points on the Mexican side of the border, where traffic is piling up, and it's only expected to get worse as this LATEST threat looms overhead.
