Barr promises Mueller report 'within a week'

U.S. Attorney General William Barr told lawmakers on Tuesday that he intends to release "within a week", the long-awaited report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election from Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Barr promises Mueller report 'within a week'

Within a week - that's the timeframe Attorney General William Barr gave lawmakers on Tuesday for the release of a redacted version of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report on the Russia probe.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) WILLIAM BARR, ATTORNEY GENERAL, SAYING: "Within a week I will be in position to release that report to the public and then I will engage with the chairmen of both judiciary committees about that report, about any further requests that they have." He made the comments during a budget hearing on Capitol Hill Tuesday.

The hearing was supposed to explore the administration's 2020 budget request for the Justice Department, but the House subcommittee's chairman Jose Serrano quickly turned the focus to Mueller's report on Russia's role in the 2016 election.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) JOSE SERRANO, HOUSE SUBCOMMITTEE CHAIRMAN, SAYING: "The American people deserve to see the full Mueller report, and to be trusted to make their own determinations on the merits." The hearing comes two weeks after Barr sent Congress a 4-page summary of Mueller's main findings, including his conclusion that the Trump campaign had not conspired with Russia in the 2016 race.

Barr has promised to deliver a REDACTED version of the report, but congressional Democrats have been demanding the full unredacted report, which has not been seen by anyone outside of the Justice Department since Mueller delivered it on March 22.

Democrats have also vowed to fight those redactions if necessary - a battle that could wind up in the courts.

After testifying before the House Appropriations subcommittee on Tuesday morning, Barr will then take the witness chair before a Senate panel on Wednesday.
