SOUNDBITE) NYC MAYOR BILL de BLASIO SAYING: "This is the epicentre of a measles outbreak" New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a public health emergency on Tuesday (April 9) as a measles outbreak rattled the borough of Brooklyn… (SOUNDBITE) NYC MAYOR BILL de BLASIO SAYING: "This will mandate vaccines for people living in the affected area.

Department of Health will issue violations and fines to people who remain unvaccinated." The outbreak has mainly been confined to the Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood with around 300 confirmed since October… That's up from only two reported cases in all of 2017… (SOUNDBITE) NYC MAYOR BILL de BLASIO SAYING: "We cannot allow this dangerous disease to make a comeback here in New York City.

We have to stop it now." Measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, but has recently seen a resurgence, with nearly 500 cases reported in 19 states this year..

De Blasio said that Dept of Health officials will check vaccination records of anyone who has been in contact with infected people in certain areas… AND will impose a fine of up to $1000 dollars if a person is not vaccinated… The measles is highly contagious and can lead to serious complications and death… Despite scientific evidence to the contrary ..a growing, vocal group of parents are opposing vaccinations, believing some vaccine ingredients can cause autism or other disorders..

While there have been no confirmed deaths in the measles outbreak, so far 21 people have been hospitalized..
