The ninth and last film in the 'Star Wars' saga features the return of the evil emperor Palpatine to threaten the young heroine Rey and the Resistance.

Fans dressed up as their favourite characters to attend the "Star Wars Celebration" convention in Chicago on Friday (April 12), as Walt Disney Co revealed the film's title - 'The Rise of Skywalker'.

The film's director J.J.

Abrams said the goal was to create something that gives "a sense of surprise and thrill and heartbreak and shock and awe but also of inevitability and making you feel good".

Lead actress, Daisy Ridley, who plays the mysterious Rey, told Reuters: "It's a satisfying, emotional end." The film is slated for release in the United States on December 20.
