U.S. Criticizes Myanmar's Decision To Uphold Sentence Of Two Reuters Journalists

According to a report by Reuters, on Wednesday, the United States criticized Myanmar after the country's high court upheld the sentencing of two Reuters journalists, expressing concerns for freedom of expression and urging that the imprisoned reporters be returned to their families.

The State Department said in a statement, "Burmaโ€™s Supreme Court decision yesterday to uphold the sentencing of Pulitzer-prize winning journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, despite serious irregularities in the case against them, sends a profoundly negative signal about freedom of expression and the protection of journalists in Burma." On Tuesday, Myanmarโ€™s top court rejected the appeal of the Reuters reporters, who were sentenced to seven years in jail for breaking the Official Secrets Act, in a highly publicized case that has raised questions regarding the countryโ€™s transition to democracy.
