Trump directs officials to toughen asylum rules

U.S. President Donald Trump wants to charge asylum seekers a fee to process their applications.

That's just one of a set of new rules the president laid out in a memorandum Monday night… that directed the Justice Department and Department of Homeland security to put in place new measures aimed at the growing number of migrants crossing the U.S. southern border Other proposals outlined in the memo include barring migrants who entered the country illegally from working until their claims are approved and setting a time limit of 180 days to process asylum claims. U.S. law already directs the Justice Department to finish asylum claims within 6 months but with a backlog of more than 800,000 cases, the reality is they often take years to finish.

(SOUNDBITE) (ENGLISH) U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP SAYING: "Asylum is a ridiculous situation because people come in and just read a line from a lawyer…It's a big con job, that's what it is." Trump gave officials 90 days to come up with a plan to carry out the new instructions, as his administration grows desperate to crack down on a surge of Central American migrants coming to the U.S. Most of those arriving request asylum…saying they are fleeing violence and persecution in their home countries.

Many of the changes would represent a dramatic shift in how asylum seekers are treated but still would be subject to regulatory procedures, which will likely take months.
