Japan's Emperor Naruhito Officially Given Position After Father Steps Down

Former Japanese Emperor Akihito renounced the throne, giving the title to his son Naruhito.

According to Reuters, Japanese Emperor Naruhito formally took the throne on April 30, 2019.

Once Naruhito took his post, he pledged to work as a symbol of the nation and the unity of its people.

Akihito ruled for three decades and when he stepped down he thanked the people and said he prayed for peace.

Naruhito is the first Japanese emperor born after World War Two and the first to be raised solely by his parents.
