Sotheby's to auction a work from Monet's celebrated grainstacks series

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Auction powerhouse Sotheby's in New York on Friday (May 3) gears up for its key spring sale, and hopes are high that a host of major works the likes of which have not hit the block for several seasons will reap strong prices.

Claude Monet's "Meules" painted in 1890 leads the Impressionist & Modern Art auction with a presale estimate in excess of $55 million.

Monet's colorful painting shows reddish grainstacks while the sun peeks out from between the stacks under a pinkish sky.

"The grainstacks series is the first series in which an artist picked a particular subject and basically celebrated it by recording something as mundane as a grainstack over a period of about 18 months," said August Uribe, Sotheby's Vice Chairman, Americas.

The artist created 25 paintings of the famed grainstacks series in the 1890s.

"Claude Monet is synonymous with both his two most important series are the water liles series as well as the grainstacks," said Uribe.

"This is, of the entire series, the one which is brightest in color and most modern in its approach to capturing that fleeting moment." Sotheby's Impressionist & Modern Art auction will take place on May 14.

Also up for auction at Sotheby's Contemporary Art sale are Mark Rothko's "Untitled," painted in 1960, which is expected to sell for up to $50 million, and an example of Francis Bacon's "Screaming Popes" titled "Study for a Head" from 1952, which is expected to sell for up to $30 million.

Sotheby's Contemporary Art auction will take place on May 16.
