Georgia governor signs heartbeat abortion ban

Georgia's Republican governor on Tuesday signed legislation outlawing abortion if a doctor can detect a fetal heartbeat, part of a concerted effort to restrict abortion rights in states across the country.

BRIAN KEMP: “As you all know, Georgia is a state that values life.” Georgia’s Republican governor, Brian Kemp, signed controversial legislation Tuesday outlawing abortion if a doctor can detect a fetal heartbeat.

Opponents say it’s a virtual ban because fetal heartbeats can be detected as early as six weeks, before a woman may be aware she is pregnant.

And this is part of the larger battle going on behind the scenes.

That is, the anti-abortion side really wants to try to get these cases before the Supreme Court so that the newly conservative Supreme Court with two appointees of President Trump could possibly overturn Roe vs.

Wade the 1973 ruling that guarantees a woman's right to an abortion rate and abortion supporters.” Kemp – who won beat Democrat Stacey Abrams for the governorship – says he’s upholding his promise to bring the toughest abortion laws in the nation to Georgia.

Protesters – some dressed as handmaids – rallied outside the capitol... with one holding a sign with the date for the next general election for governor.

And -- in neighboring Alabama, a bill that would ban all abortion except to save the life of the mother is due to come up for a vote in state senate on Thursday, after having passed the House last week.
