North Korea launches second missile test in a week

North Korea fired what appeared to be two short-range missiles on Thursday, the South's military said, less than a week after its leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test-firing of multiple rockets and a missile.

North Korea launches second missile test in a week

North Korea fired two short-range missiles on Thursday (May 9), according to the South Korean military, marking the second set of tests in a week.

Officials said the latest projectiles flew around 260 miles - likely even further than the range of most weapons launched in the first round on Saturday (May 4).

North Korea claims those tests - overseen by Kim Jong Un - were ''regular and self-defensive'' and not an act of provocation.

But it raised tensions on the Korean peninsula at a time of stalemate in peace talks.

Last year, both sides shook hands and raised a glass of Swiss wine in a toast to "peace," pointing towards a thawing in relations.

But progress stalled at the Hanoi Summit in February.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un failed to produce a deal to end Pyongyang's nuclear programme in return for easing sanctions.

As the second set of test missiles took to the air, Stephen Biegun, the U.S. Special Representative for North Korea was in Seoul, to discuss efforts to advance the denuclearization of the North.
