Heavy rain and flash floods hit Houston

Heavy rain has brought flooding to large parts of South Central United States, closing down roads and damaging homes.

In Houston, Texas local broadcasters on Thursday (May 9) aired footage of cars submerged in high water as people struggled to get to higher ground.

Local media report that hail and tornados are possible through Friday (May 10).

A large residence in Friendswood, near Houston, was shown engulfed in flames.

Authorities didn't confirm the cause of the blaze, but there had been lightning strikes in the area.

Houston isn't alone in its misery.

Tens of thousands of homes are without power in eastern Texas.

Authorities are working to minimize the flooding as much as possible.

Flooding rains are expected to continue in South and Midwest states including Texas, Missouri and Oklahoma.
