Avenatti pleads not guilty to swindling Daniels and Nike

Lawyer Michael Avenatti pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to charges that he stole from porn star Stormy Daniels, the client who propelled him to fame as an outspoken adversary of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Avenatti pleads not guilty to swindling Daniels and Nike

Michael Avenatti - in and out of Manhattan courtrooms on Tuesday - as the lawyer and staunch critic of U.S. President Donald Trump..

Pleaded not guilty to ripping off his former client porn star Stormy Daniels.

The charges related to the Daniels case announced last week- include one count of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft, and carry a maximum combined penalty of 22 years in prison.

NATSOT FILE MICHAEL AVENATTI, LAWYER SAYING: "Let me tell you a little bit about Stormy Daniels." Prosecutors are accusing Avenatti of stealing about $300,000 from Daniels book deal- by forging her signature, and directing that money be sent to his bank account.

Those funds- prosecutors allege -used to fund an extravagant lifestyle..

Including purchasing a Ferrari, hotels, airfare and restaurant meals.

The 48-year old attorney rocketed to fame after representing Daniels- who received hush money to keep quiet about an affair she claimed to have had with Trump in 2006..

Which the president denies.

Daniels dropped Avenatti as her lawyer earlier this year.

Her book was published in October and includes a note from Avenatti.

Later on Tuesday Avenatti pleaded not guilty once again, on a separate indictment.

He was charged in March for trying to extort more than $20 million from Nike by threatening to expose what he called its improper payments to high school athletes.

Nike has denied wrongdoing, and assisted prosecutors prior to Avenatti's arrest.

Avenatti also faces dozens of charges in southern California, where prosecutors in April accused him of stealing millions of dollars from clients to pay for personal and business expenses... SOUNDBITE U.S. ATTORNEY FOR THE CENTRAL DISTRICT OF CALIFORNIA, NICK HANNA SAYING: "A corrupt lawyer who instead fights for his selfish interests." ...and lying to the Internal Revenue Service and a Mississippi bank about his finances.

The embattled lawyer maintains his innocence in all the cases.

SOUNDBITE MICHAEL AVENATTI, LAWYER SAYING: "I will be fully exonerated and justice will be done.

" Avenatti flirted last year with a 2020 White House run..but since being charged he has adopted a lower profile.
