Former Red Sox star Ortiz shot in Dominican Republic

David Ortiz, a three-time World Series champion during his career with the Boston Red Sox, is in stable condition after being shot Sunday at a bar in the Dominican Republic.

His father, Leo Ortiz, spoke with Reuters as Linda So reports.

Red Sox legend David Ortiz is recovering in the hospital after being shot in his native Dominican Republic on Sunday.

The three-time World Series champ was at a Santo Domingo bar when he was shot in the back by a motorcyclist.

Police say multiple suspects are in custody.

Ortiz' father spoke to reporters outside the hospital after his surgery.

SOUNDBITE: FATHER OF DAVID ORTIZ, LEO ORTIZ, SAYING: "He's stable, he's out of danger.

(Journalist: Have you spoken to him?) I haven't spoken to him but this is based on what the medic explained to me after the operation." A second person, Dominican TV host Jhoel Lopez who was with Ortiz at the time, was also reportedly shot..

He's said to be in a stable condition.

Ortiz retired from the big league in 2016 after 14 seasons with the Red Sox as the team's designated hitter and first baseman.

The circumstances of the shooting are under investigation.
