David Ortiz flown to Boston to recover after shooting

Boston Red Sox slugger David "Big Papi" Ortiz left hospital under heavy security in the Dominican Republic after surgery for a gunshot wound.

Boston baseball legend David Ortiz was let out of a Dominican Republic hospital Monday (June 10) after six-hour surgery for a gunshot wound.

He was then flown to Boston and driven by ambulance to Boston General Hospital for further treatment.

Police say his assailants shot him in the back at a nightclub late on Sunday- Some at the club then beat one of the suspects before police took him into custody.

Doctors say they had to remove part of Ortiz' intestines and gallbladder during the surgery.

(SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) DOCTOR ABEL GONZALEZ, SAYING: "Today he regained conscious, he opened his eyes and the first thing he asked for was his family." A second person, Dominican TV host Jhoel Lopez who was with Ortiz at the time, was also reportedly shot.

He's said to be in a stable condition.

Ortiz retired from the big league in 2016 after 14 seasons with the Red Sox as the team's designated hitter and first baseman.

Police and the Red Sox say they're investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
