Hong Kong police took back control of the streets surrounding their headquarters in the early hours of Thursday (June 27), which had been blocked for several hours by protesters.

Thousands of people in Hong Kong joined an evening protest on Wednesday (June 25) and marched to major foreign consulates, urging leaders gathering for this week's G20 summit to back their demand to scrap a much criticized extradition bill.

Many had donned helmets, masks and goggles, as they cursed Hong Kong's police chief for what they say was a brutal clampdown on some protests in recent weeks.

Police officers equipped with crowd control gear such as batons and shields chased dozens of protesters through the streets of Wan Chai, an iconic nightlife hotspot that played host to many confrontations.

Running towards the protesters with batons and helmets, the police then chased the protesters down several side streets, until they were finally cornered on a major thoroughfare.

Requests to the police by Reuters to confirm the number of arrests made or the nature of the charges have so far gone unanswered.
