Dead Fish Float on Kentucky River Following Jim Beam Warehouse Fire

Environmental officials in Kentucky said on July 8 that they were expecting the alcoholic plume that had killed fish in the Kentucky River to dissipate quickly as it entered the larger Ohio River at Carrollton.

The 23-mile-long plume was caused by runoff after a fire at a warehouse containing Jim Beam bourbon, in Versailles.

Residents reported that tap water in the Frankfort area had a slight taste and odor, according to the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet, which added that the water was safe to drink regardless.

A kill count was being carried out by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.
