NATS: "I have lived the American dream." Ross Perot, the feisty, self-made Texas billionaire who shook up American politics, twice running for president as an independent, has died after a battle with leukemia.

He was 89.

His family says he died early Tuesday at his home in Dallas surrounded by family.

The son of a cotton broker, Perot made his fortune as a ground-breaking entrepreneur in the computer data processing industry.

But he was best known for his two presidential runs in the 1990s that struck a chord with disgruntled voters.

The folksy independent and master salesman quickly found support among Americans turned off by the Republican and Democratic parties.

PEROT UPSOUND His outsider campaign, mostly financed with his own money, advocated for cutting the national debt and fighting trade deals such as NAFTA... SOT HERE...MAYBE There will be a giant giant sucking sound of jobs going south" or " we have to clean out the barn"... Perot finished with a respectable 19 percent of the vote in 1992, when Democrat Bill Clinton beat out incumbent George HW Bush.

For his 1996 White House run, Perot started the Reform Party but captured little more than 8 percent of the popular vote.

Perot is also known for using his fortune on behalf of POWs and U.S. soldiers missing in action.

Perot is survived by his wife and five children.
