Trump quit Iran nuke deal "to spite Obama"

President Donald Trump pulled out of the Iran nuclear pact to spite Barack Obama, according to Britain's Mail on Sunday, citing the former UK ambassador to Washington.

More leaked British diplomatic cables, these ones saying that U.S. President Donald Trump pulled out of the Iran nuclear pact simply to spite his predecessor Barack Obama.

That was the assessment of former UK ambassador to Washington Kim Darroch, in the latest cables printed by Britain's Mail on Sunday.

Darroch was writing in May 2018 about what he called an act of "diplomatic vandalism".

Last week, the same paper published memos by Darroch calling the Trump administration "inept" and "dysfunctional".

Enraged tweets from the president in response called Darroch "wacky" and "pompous".

And outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May "foolish" for backing him after the leak.

The rift with the United States prompted Darroch to resign, which has sent shockwaves through Britain's establishment.

Especially after the favorite for May's job, Boris Johnson, was accused of "throwing Darroch under a bus" by avoiding backing him during a televised debate.

A diplomatic source told Reuters the lack of support from the likely next prime minister was a factor in Darroch's decision to quit.

This weekend Johnson came under fire again.

Meanwhile, British police have identified the suspect behind the leak, according to a report in the Sunday Times paper.

Officials investigating the leaks have ruled out hacking by a foreign state, the Sunday Times said.

And instead think a person with access to historical files just went in and grabbed material.

Spies from Britain's GCHQ eavesdropping agency have joined the hunt, scouring emails and phone records.

In yet more fall-out, Britain's top counterterrorism officer has come under fire for warning media not to publish leaked government documents, provoking anger and fears of a threat to media freedom.
