Residents Wade Through Storm Surge as Barry Slams Mandeville Lakefront

Residents in Mandeville, Louisiana, waded through floodwaters on Saturday, July 13, after Tropical Storm Barry made landfall as a hurricane and caused a storm surge.

Video from the Mandeville lakefront shows waters from Lake Pontchartrain pushing past the lake’s shoreline and flooding low-lying areas.

A number of people can be seen wading knee-deep in the waters.

The National Hurricane Center confirmed that Barry had strengthened from tropical storm to a hurricane before making landfall, and said it would bring life-threatening winds and flooding to the Gulf Coast.

It later reported that Barry had weakened back to a tropical storm.
