Are Video Games the New Social Media?

Are video games and esports the new form of social media?

Zev Fima, Research Analyst for ActionAlertsPLUS, sat down with Jens Hilgers, CEO and Co-founder of DOJO Madness and a Founding partner of BITKRAFT Esports Ventures, who believes they are a type of social media and have been used as a form of social interaction for decades, "it is digital natives in the first place that will sort of use and have spent their time in virtual realities and predominantly for that sake, video games as social spaces, and kind of accept that relationship or a social interaction in a virtual world is sort of high value and can replace a lot of what's happening in the real world." Will Hershey, the Co-founder and CEO of Roundhill Investments, which is focused on developing financial products that offer exposure to investment themes appealing to the next generation of investors, and just started NERD, an esports ETF, agrees with Hilgers sentiment and thinks the best is yet to come, "It's been going on for a long time.

I do think that now we've seen advances in technology that are enabling it to go to that next level, right?

Just look at a platform like Twitch or Huya in China where people can now actually watch other people play with pretty much no delay and have that other layer of interaction where you have the viewer getting involved." Watch the video above to find out why else Hilgers and Hershey believe that investors should view esports and video games as a form of social media.
