Trump wants to rein in intelligence agencies ‘run amok’

President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he needed his director of national intelligence replacement pick John Ratcliffe to "rein it in." Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he’d rather not address his qualifications for the job until he meets with the nominee, but Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Ratcliffe is "exactly the wrong person to handle DNI." Rough Cut (no reporter narration).

Trump wants to rein in intelligence agencies ‘run amok’

Trump said on Sunday he would nominate Representative John Ratcliffe, a Texas Republican who strongly defended him at a recent congressional hearing, to replace Dan Coats as the U.S. spy chief.

Schumer criticized the nominee.

"He is so partisan, and he has believed in so many conspiracy theories, that he's exactly the wrong person to handle DNI," he said.

Former top intelligence officials questioned whether Ratcliffe, a 3rd term lawmaker who has served on the House intelligence committee for just six months, had the background to oversee the U.S. intelligence community's various civilian and military agencies.
