The move comes after the Pentagon said on Monday (August 19) it had tested a conventionally-configured cruise missile that hit its target after 310 miles of flight - the first such test since the U.S. pulled out of a major arms control treaty with Russia on August 2.

Putin on Friday warned that Russia could not stand idly by while the U.S. discussed plans of possibly deploying new missiles in the Asia-Pacific region which he said "affects our core interests as it is close to Russia's borders".

At a meeting of the U.N.

Security Council Thursday (Augsut 22), Russia blasted the U.S. for withdrawing from the landmark Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, or INF.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) DMITRY POLYANSKIY, RUSSIA'S DEPUTY AMBASSADOR TO THE U.N., SAYING: "On the whole, do you realize because of the U.S.'s geopolitical ambitions, we are one step from an arms race that cannot be controlled or regulated in any way?

We are very concerned about that, but our American colleagues are not." The 1987 pact had banned producing and testing land-based missiles with a range from 310 to 3,400 miles.

Trump and top aides insist Russia had already been violating the treaty, an accusation Moscow has denied.
