Trump suspends entry of immigrants who can't pay for healthcare

U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday signed a proclamation suspending entry of immigrants who will not be covered by health insurance within 30 days of entering the United States or do not have the means to pay for their healthcare costs themselves.

Immigrants who can't prove they will have healthcare coverage or the means to pay for medical care on their own will soon be blocked from entering the United States.

The new rule, announced Friday by President Donald Trump will take effect November 3 and applies to people seeking to enter the U.S. with an immigrant visa.

Refugees and asylum seekers are exempt.

The move is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to limit the number of low-income immigrants coming to the U.S. Under another rule - expected to take effect later this month - the administration will be able to reject applicants for temporary or permanent visas if they fail to meet high enough income standards or if they receive public assistance like welfare or food stamps.
