WCBI News at Ten - Sunday, October 6th, 2019

Good evening and thank you for joining us, i'm cash matlock.

Three mississippi heros are honored on a national platform.

The u.s. fire service paid tribute to the firefighters, who died in the line of duty, during the 38th national fallen firefighters memorial service earlier today.

They are among the 92 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2018 and 27 firefighters who died in previous years who will be remembered at the official national service at the national fire academy in emmitsburg, maryland.

34-year-old firefighter dustin w.

Grubbs of the magee volunteer fire department, died on november 3, 2018, from a motor vehicle accident while on his way to the magee volunteer fire department to respond to a structure fire.

Cyber security is a hot topic nationally--but what about right here in the state?

Courtney ann jackson explains the latest cyber security audit for mississippi government offices.

"whether you like it or not, your personal information probably lives on a state computer somewhere."

State auditor shad white's office sent a cyber security survey to 125 state government offices.

"of those 125--only 71 replied.

That leaves 54 that did not reply at all to the survey.

So, we have absolutely no idea whether those 54 are compliant on cyber security laws and we have no idea if they're protecting the data."

But it's still not the best picture when you look at those who did reply.

The survey found over half of all respondents are less than 75% compliant with state cyber security laws.

"the system is weak.

We know that.

So, we need to do something about it."

Another problem with all government offices not paying attention to cyber security concerns?

All of the computer system are connected in various ways and a weak link agency could provide an even bigger window for a hacker.

"another thing that state agencies are required to do is have a third party assessment.

So, that's a fancy way of saying someone from the outside needs to be paid to come in and try to break in and hack your system.

A lot of state agencies are doing that.

Unfortunately, many are not."

This report didn't reveal the specific offices that aren't complying with the law.

Here's why.

"it would've been irresponsible of me to say x agency hasn't encrypted their data.

Because then i'm telling the world, that's where you need to go and hack because they're not encrypting their data."

When asked what concerned taxpayers should do---he suggests reaching out to lawmakers about holding these offices accountable about being in compliance with cyber security laws.

President trump faces a deepening political crisis tonight.

A second whistle blower has come forward -- this one with first- hand knowledge -- supporting the original complaint that set-off an impeachment inquiry over the president's dealings with ukraine.

Nikole killion is at the white house tonight ..

With the latest today attorney mark zaid tweeted: "i can confirm this report of a second #whistleblower being represented by our legal team..adding: "this wber has first hand knowledge."

Sot rep.

Val demmings/ florida: @ fns/9:07:50am the reporting that a second whistleblower has come forward or is about to come forward, i believe again would be someone who sees wrongdoing, hears wrongdoing, and wants to do something about it.

House democrats have subpoenaed the white house for documents related to more information about the president's controversial july phone call with ukraine's leader - pressuring him to investigate former vice president biden and son, hunter -- who served as a director of worked for a ukranian gas company.

Republicans claim the president's actions are just 'politics as usual.'

They're insisting there is no connection to there was no quid pro quo between the president's request and his decision to withhold hold up $400 million dollars in u-s military aid to ukraine.

Wisconsin senator ron johnson pushed back against reports he "winced" at the idea in an august call with the president.

Rep.

Ron johnson/ wisconsin // mtp @ 9:10:00 "i didn't want those connected.

I was supporting the aid.

Here's the reason i came forward - when i asked the president about it, he vehemently denied it."

On twitter today ... the president once again attacked the spent most of the day digging into former vice president.

Writing he wrote: "i would love running against 1% joe the white house issued a statement in response to the second whistleblower.

It says it doesn't matter how many people decide to call themselves whistleblowers about the same telephone call.., it doesn't change the fact that the president has done nothing wrong.

But keep in mind the original complaint is not just about one phone call but a series of interactions.

Today, webster county employees celebrated their newly-built courthouse that comes with all the bells and whistles.

Our stephanie poole attended the open house and has more on the story.

Community members gathered at the new webster county courthouse for an open house.

In 2013, a fire destroyed the old courthouse forcing employees to move into a temporary location.

District 2 supervisor board president pat cummings says he's hopeful the facility will be beneficial to staff and county workers.

" we want to take the time right now to thank everybody who works for webster county that made this transition possible, made it easier for all of us.

Without them we couldn't have done it."

This state-of-the-art building now houses county offices, courtrooms, judge's chambers and a jury room, all costing around 5-million dollars.

While some people are excited about the new structure, there are those who are feeling a little more nostalgic.

Perval and garland hunt were married in the original courthouse building 76 years ago... " it's sad to think about the od courthouse burning because that's where we became mr. and mrs. hunt but i'm glad for webster county and it's a nice building and i'm glad to be here."

Overall, community members and staff are looking forward to what the future holds.

"as a board, we hope and think that we built a courthouse that is very pleasing to the people of webster county and we also hope that we've a courthouse that will last a hundred years as well as the old one did.

" reporting in webster county, stephanie poole, wcbi news.

Over 100 people showed up for the open house.

Just because it doesn't feel like october outside doesn't mean that dozens of columbus locals didn't make their way to zachary's for the 5th annual oktober fest.

Our deandria turner attended the festival, and has more on what makes it so special.

Live music, german food, and a twist to celebrate oktoberfest "ours is more focused on, yeah here's a little bit of german food and beer but here's the arts that are locally grown and so we're celebrating that."

The 5th annual columbus arts council oktoberfest focuses on local artists.

"we're very proud of the fact that we have a lot of good artists in this area.

This is a good venue for them to get known and to sell some of their works as well" craft beers.

Drawings.

And bratwurst help the art council stay on track with their goals.

"we do this every year to try to raise funds our art community here."

... says the festival is a time for celebration.

"we have music playing in the back as well and it's just a good way, on a sunday, when it's not really that hot just to kind of enjoy themselves and have a good time."

... lived in germany for the past 5 years and celebrated oktoberfest by bringing munich tradition to columbus "i'm the only one dressed up right now usually more people are dressed up but the big steins and the environment and the music intense is different.

It's just a blast of experience."

"oktoberfest.

Come and have a good time and look at some good art and enjoy yourself."

According to o fest dot com... oktober fest began with a celebration of a royal wedding on october 10th, 1810 in munich germany.

This years celebration in columbus was in honor of ... chores... something not many people look forward to.

But there may be a way to make them a little easier.

Mom to mom is next.

Stay with us.

Chores... something even adults don't look forward to sometimes... but what if i told you there was a way to make them a little more enjoyable?

Here's this week's mom to mom... take a look.

Speaker 1: do your kids hate chores just as much as mine do?

My kids are eight and six and we are just now getting into teaching chores.

In hindsight, i wish i had starteda little bit earlier.

A two-year old can start with easy chores such as cleaning up their room, getting their socks out of their drawers and attempting to put them on by themselves, putting the dirty clothes in the hamper.

Those are all easy things that a two-year old can do and give themselves a sense of accomplishment.

As the kids get older the chores can become a little bit harder and they can take on some of mom's chores and give mom a little more free time.

Chores such as folding their clothes, helping you do the laundry, dress themselves, pick out their own clothes.

They can help you set the table, and help you load the dishwasher or put the dirty dishes in the sink and make their bed in the morning.

So little things that the moms are doing right now, they can do for you.

With chores, it always comes with an incentive whether that be a monetary incentive, whether that is a screen-time incentive, play time, snack time.

Whatever motivates your child, that's what you should work into chores.

I'd love to hear what you're doing at home so like us on facebook and send me what you're doing at home with your kids and chores.

I'll see you next week.

Love it or loathe it, everyone was talking about one movie this weekend.

Did "joker" have the last laugh at the box office?

David daniel has the top five estimates.

"it: chapter two" crossed the 200-million mark in domestic box office with a fifth-place weekend worth five-point- four million dollars.

"hustlers" grabbed six-point- three million dollars to land at number four.

Another strong weekend for "downton abbey," which made eight- million dollars for third place and 74-million domestic.

"what now?"

"i wish there was a way out of here."

After one weekend on top, "abominable" slipped to second place, on ticket sales of 12- million dollars.
