RESTRICTIONS: Broadcast: NO USE JAPAN, NO USE TAIWAN Digital: NO USE JAPAN, NO USE TAIWAN Toyota says it will supply up to 20 specially designed e-Palette electric self-driving vehicles for ferrying athletes and related staff during the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympics, the company announced earlier this week.

The battery-powered vehicle is equipped with large sliding doors and powered ramps to ease group boarding by Paralympians and other athletes, Toyota said in a press release published Wednesday on its website.

The vehicle will feature handrails that are easy to grab regardless of height, high-contrast interior colors to assist the color-blind and a low floor.

According to Toyota, the driverless vehicle will have enough room for four wheelchairs and seven standing passengers.

The vehicle is designed with a focus on safety and automated low-speed driving, with cameras and sensors for light detection and ranging, and high accuracy 3D mapping.

The special e-Palette will have a 360-degree field of vision and is capable of safe self-driving at speeds up to 20 km per hour with an onboard safety operator, or level-4 autonomy.

"According to Toyota, the circular displays at the front and rear are designed to resemble stylized eyes, enabling the vehicle to signal its status, including driving, stopping for pedestrians and recharging." RUNDOWN SHOWS: 1.
