High winds and brittle conditions have caused preemptive power shutoffs in northern and central California for at least 500,000 people.

The move by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) is reportedly being done in an attempt to prevent the spread of wildfires.

This isnโ€™t the first time that PG&E has done this, as they previously shutoff power to two million customers for several days in early October.

According to the National Weather Service, wind gusts of up to 70 mph are currently effecting the area.

A fire broke out in Sonoma County early Thursday morning and is reportedly growing at a โ€œcritical rate.โ€ .

It has not yet been contained.

Following the power shutoffs, PG&E reassured customers that power would be restored when possible.

Once the weather subsides and it is safe to do so, PG&E crews will begin patrolling power lines, repairing damaged equipment and restoring customers, PG&E, via โ€˜USA Todayโ€™.

Any restoration of power may be short-lived however, as more strong winds are expected on Sunday and Monday.
