The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday it will review a petition asking the agency to formally investigate 500,000 Tesla vehicles over sudden unintended acceleration reports.

Yahaira Jacquez has more.

A U.S. agency says it's looking into claims that Tesla's vehicles allegedly have flaws that lead to unintended acceleration.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced on Friday it will review a petition asking it to formally investigate half a million Tesla vehicles.

The petition cites 127 complaints that include more than 100 crashes and 52 injuries.

Tesla did not immediately comment.

Its shares dipped on the news.

This comes after the same agency last week said it was launching an investigation into a crash of a Tesla Model 3 in December that left a passenger dead after the vehicle collided with a parked fire truck in Indiana.

The crash is the 14th involving the electric carmaker that the agency's investigating.

It suspects the company's so-called Autopilot or other driver assistance system was in use.
