US Labor Union Membership Has Plummeted to a New Low According to recent figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 10.3 percent of salaried workers are in unions.

Back in 1983, American union membership was over 20 percent.

The data also shows that only 6.2 percent are unionized within the private sector.

For local unions, such as police, the rate is over 33 percent.

The Bureau goes on to report that seven states contain half of all U.S. union members.

California and New York combine for over 4.2 of the 14.6 million recorded in unionization.

Labor education research director Kate Bronfenbrenner says the drop is linked to anti-labor policies.
