Review: "The Last Ship" relaunch is a colossal hit!

The Last Ship is set to sail Stings legacy alongside the great 18th century composers.

During the Classical era, composers not only wrote music they created operatic productions as well.

This marvelous musical is what yesterday’s operas are – a classic.

It has the entire vestige.

The new book by Lorne Campbell is simple, yet comprises a universal story with superb acting.

The entire ensemble was well cast, and the voices curated perfectly.

The setting is a shipyard in Wallsend, North East England in 1986 and is based on Sting’s childhood and memories of the ship building community that he is passionately proud of.

The stories of the fierce strong women are the anchors in this theatrical nostalgia.

The cast uses Geordie, a dialect of Tyneside in the North East of England.

Sting masterfully plays the role of Jackie White and is well matched with the astute actress, Jackie Morrison who plays his hinny (wife in Geordie dialect).

Glorious music and lyrics by Sting, stupendous voices by the cast – a special acknowledgment to the great Frances McNamee (Meg Dawson) whose voice is a force and acting is exquisite.

She sings “If You Ever See Me Talking to a Sailor” and amazes the audience – a shining star, a huge talent we want to see more of.

The handsome and dazzling Oliver Savile pairs nicely with McNamee as her former lover who reappears in her life to discover he has a daughter.

The remainder of the entirely British cast includes Marc Akinfolarin, Joe Caffrey, Matt Corner, Susan Fay, Orla Gormley, Annie Grace, Sean Kearns, Oliver Kearney, David Muscat, Tom Parsons, Joseph Peacock, Sophie Reid, Hannah Richardson and Jade Sophia Vertannes. The much anticipated opening night of The Last Ship received a well-deserved standing ovation with an encore that would have repeated if not for the humble exit by Sting and his shipmates.Performances for Sting’s acclaimed musical, The Last Ship, will begin on January 14, 2020.
