Alabama fire officials reported multiple fatalities after a blaze tore through a dock along the Tennesee River early Monday morning.

Scottsboro Fire Chief Gene Mecklaus told CBS News the flames consumed 35 boats docked in Jackson County Park.

Mecklaus said seven people were sent to the hospital, and nine people people are missing.

Local media described Jackson County Park as a riverboat community, and CBS News reported the fire erupted shortly after midnight when many residents were asleep.

A Jackson County Sherriff's Deputy told the Associated Press that numerous people were able to escape by jumping into the water, but said the county wanted to get divers in the river to look for those who did not survive.
