Trump suspends global travel programs for New Yorkers

The Trump administration has temporarily barred New Yorkers from several programs that allow faster security checks when they enter the United States, widening a dispute over a New York state law limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.

Yahaira Jacquez reports.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced it had barred New Yorkers from programs such as Global Entry that allow travelers to speed through security checks when they enter the U.S. A move that appears to be retaliation against New York state's stance on immigration enforcement.

DHS, which oversees border and immigration services, on Thursday said that New Yorkers can no longer enroll or renew passes for the travel programs. The standoff between Albany and Washington means travelers such as Elaine Crane will lose out on the program.

This is an outrage." The programs include Global Entry and Nexus, which afford travelers who pass a background check the chance to skip customs and passport lines at certain ports of entry.

While speaking to reporters about the new rule... Acting Deputy Secretary of DHS Ken Cuccinelli slammed New York over a law passed last year limiting the information the New York DMV - which issues driver's licenses - could share with federal immigration authorities.

He told reporters that New York's lack of security cooperation with federal immigration authorities necessitated the suspension of such travel programs. The DHS estimated that if the ban stays in place through the end of the fiscal year, the suspension could affect up to 200,000 New Yorkers who attempt to renew membership.
