Basketball team slams announcer for calling players' names 'disgusting'

An Oklahoma City high school girls basketball team has condemned an announcer for calling the names of several players “disgusting”.

On Feb.

21, the Crooked Oak High School girls basketball team was set to play Newkirk High School for the district title.

During the introduction, an unidentified Newkirk announcer allegedly said the names of some of the Crooked Oak players were “pretty disgusting”.

“Now, their names are pretty disgusting, but I’m gonna try to call them out,” the announcer said in a now viral video.

According to the team, the announcer had even asked for pronunciations and had gone through the names correctly before the incident occurred.

Though Crooked Oak went on to win, one of the players said the victory was overshadowed by the announcer’s offensive remark.

“It should be a very big accomplishment, but it’s kind of getting taken away from us by something we had no control over, something as simple as having different names”.

Newkirk’s public school district superintendent, Brady Barnes, issued an apology on Facebook the following day.

This unfortunate comment does not represent the Newkirk Public Schools or its beliefs.

We sincerely apologize for any pain or affront our announcer’s comment has caused"
