With so many questions about the coronavirus á a call center is opening in our area.

Details coming up kimt news three first at four starts right now./// good afternoon and thank you for joining us for kimt news three first at four.

I'm raquel we start this afternoon off with breaking news.

A case of coronavirus is confirmed in olmsted county.

There are now a total of 5 confirmed cases in the state of minnesota.

Team coverage we're bringing you team coverage of the coronavirus.

Kimt news three's evening anchor george malletá reporter annalise johnsonáand myself are bringing the very latest to make sure you're prepared./// we start with george live in rochester.

George á you were at today's press conference with olmsted county health leaders.

Fill us in on the latest.xxx live raquel nobody said the words "don't panic" at this afternoon's news conference, but the message was undeniable and makes a lot of sense.

Don't panic.xxx at this afternoon's hastily assembled news conferenceáááá the messaging was clear and concise.

Graham briggs, the director of olmsted county public health shared that a single case of coronavirus has been confirmed here.

That person has been treated, is at home and recovering.

Their prognosis is good.

Doctors believe the patient came in contact with the virus while traveling in a location where there are a greater number of cases.

Briggs, though, was clear.

We all need to be thinking about what we will do if community spread cases turn up here.

It's really time to consider now, what you are going to do now if we do start making recommendatio ns around local transmission that might involve cancellation of travel or cancellation of meetings or moving the way that you do live your daily life for the short term.

Briggs tone throughout the newser was unfailingly optimistic.

He is confident that the vast majority of coronavirus cases are and will be mildáááá with patients exhibiting little more than a fever... runny nose and cough.

George outlines some of the other points made at the news conference.

Live in rochesterá george mallet kimt news 3.////// thanks georgeá be sure to stay with kimt news three on air and online as we continue to learn more.///// take a look at thisá kimt drone three captured this shot of mayo clinic conducting a driveáthrough process to collect corronavirus specimens for testing at the mayo family clinic northá west building.

Mayo clinic saysá patients who meet the criteria for testing are directed to the location.

Mayo staff collects the specimens, using appropriate precautions, and send them to the minnesota department of health for testing the driveá through approach reduces the need for other critically constrained resources.////// with the first case of the coronavirus confirmed in olmsted county á many are wondering what will happen as the weather warms up.

Because other viral respiratory diseases á like the flu á decrease in the spring and summer.

But as a mayo clinic infectious disease specialist explains á no one knows what to expect from the coronavirus.xx x "at this point, we don't know enough about this virus to understand how it's going to behave over time," doctor tosh says there are a few possible outcomes.

"in 2003 sars caused an outbreak, but not quite to the magnitude we're seeing here.

But as the weather warmed up, we were able to contain the virus.

It went away, essentially completely."

While that would be the bestácase scenario á the coronavirus could also behave more like an avian influenza outbreak á which reá emerge every once in awhile á go away á and then come back.

The third possibility is that it could become an endemic á like the middle east respiratory syndrome á known as mers.

That means there's ongoing spread of an illness within a certain population or region.

"one of these three things is going to happen with this new coronavirus, and we will have to see over time which of these it will be./// i'm digging deeper into several different issues surrounding the coronavirus.

At fouráthirty á we'll be going over some important terms you need to know á like the difference between isolation and quarantine.

At five á i'll show you why mayo clinic experts say most cases of the virus are (mild.

And at six á we'll look into how mayo clinic is preparing for a possible pandemic./// in iowa á there are thirteen confirmed cases of coronavirus.

That's why a call center is opening in cerro gordo county á to answer questions about the disease.

Live kimt news three's alex jirgens joins us live in mason city with the details á alex?

Xxx there are a lot of questions surrounding the coronavirus.

Phones have been ringing more than usual at cerro gordo county public health.

"we'll track and see how many calls are coming in on a daily basis, and determine how long do we need to leave it open.

For now, we set a window, we'll look at it in a week, and see if we need to keep it open.

If we need to keep it open long term, we'll do that."

With the opening of the call center tomorrow á hanft is trying to give the most accurate information with what's available.

"we know that we're in this for the long haul, and we're going to continue to do everything we possibly can for our community and try to provide the guidance they're looking for."

/// the call center will officially open tomorrow morning at 8 aá m.

Details coming up kimt news 3 continues to bring you team coverage after a case of coronavirus is confirmed in olmsted county.

Wrapping up just about 2 hours ago á county leaders briefed the public about the case.

Kimt news 3's george mallet was at the conference and joins us live to break it down.

George?

Raquel nobody said the words "don't panic" at this afternoon's news conference, but the message was undeniable and makes a lot of sense.

Don't panic.xxx it may have been inevitable.

Yes olmsted county has its first confirmed case of corona virus.

But graham briggs the director of olmsted county public health says that patient is recovering at home.

He doesn't want the risk to the general public overstated.+ "80 percent of people that get this will have a mild clinical syndrome similar to a cold or the flu a runny nose a little fever and a cough so it's not a situation where we really have to be worried but i think it's likely wee will see more cases."

Briggs message throughout... olmsted county is prepared!

George outlines some of the other points made at the news conference.

Live in thanks georgeá be sure to stay with kimt news three on air and online as we continue to learn more.///// as fear over the illness grows á some of the terms used when talking about the coronavirus can be confusing.

So we're going to break it down for you.

Two words we're hearing a lot of are isolation and quarantine./// isolation separates those who are sick with a contagious disease from those who are not to avoid transmission.

Quarantine separates and restricts movement of people who may have been exposed to a contagious disease, but do not yet show the main difference between quarantine and isolation is whether the person has symptoms or not," explains dr. rajapakse.

"quarantine is applied to people who have been exposed but are not symptomatic; whereas, isolation applies to people who are already exhibiting symptoms."

/// another term we're hearing a lot of is incubation period.

It refers to the time from exposure to an infection to the onset of symptoms. the incubation period is specific to different diseases or conditions.xxx based on the information we have now about covidá19, we suspect the longer end of the incubation period is about 14 days.

So that's the duration that has been used for the quarantines that have been put in place in multiple areas.

Now lets talk about the difference between an epidemic á a pandemic á and an endemic.

An epidemic is a rapid increase in the number of cases of a disease above what is normally expected in a given area's population.

A pandemic refers to a global epidemic á one that has spread over several countries or continents á and affects a large number of people.

And an endemic means ongoing transmission or spread of an illness within a certain population or region.

So what about an (outbreak?

Initially outbreaks like this usually are detected by detection of a cluster, so a group of cases of similar illness or disease.

If it's not contained at that point, then it could develop into an outbreak, so an increase in cases in a certain local area.

Spread beyond that could then become epidemic, or within a country or a local region, and then if there's spread, more widespread, so across multiple countries, continents or around the world, then that becomes a pandemic.

/// to limit the spread of the coronavirusá mayo clinic is now restricting all nonáessential business travel.

This includes international and domestic trips and travel to and from mayo campuses in florida and arizona.

Business travel between midwest locations using personal vehicles will be allowed.

This restriction will be in place through the end of august.
