Midmorning With Aundrea - April 3, 2020 (Part 1)

During these socially isolating time, it's important to keep in touch with friends and family.

We explore the best technologies to keep you and your loved ones connected.

And the ladies from The Fitness Factor give us some cardio exercises you can perform from your own home.

And Tom Eble and former WCBI sports directors reminisce on the highlights of their careers in broadcasting.

Power of prayer.

A very specical midmorning starts right now.

While many of us are practicing social distancing in efforts to stop the spread of the coronavirus, it doesn't mean you have to lose contact with your loved ones cnet's kara tsuboi reports on the best technology to stay in touch with friends and family during this socially isolating time whether your friend is down the street or across the country, there are so many great tools to keep in touch.

Apple iphone users are likely already familiar with facetime, the free apple app that allows you to make voice or video calls with up to 32 contacts at a time.

For android users, a similar app for voice and video calls is google duo.

It's also free and let's you chat with up to eight friends at a time.

If you need to reach someone overseas, try the apps what's app or viber to talk, text or video call.

International phone calls start at nine bucks a month with viber, but your texting group can be as large as you like.

Group chatting is limited to 256 people with what's app, but it works over your cellular network so calls and texts are free.

What's app users will also enjoy facebook portal.

Since it's a device set up in your home, it's slightly less portable, but still a free way to share photos, videos and make voice and video calls with anyone, not just your facebook friends.

The screen starts at one hundred and twenty nine dollars.

Skype is still a totally viable option and a service people have been using for more than 15 years.

Enjoy the free app on your phone or computer.

If you're trying to keep in touch with colleagues, many companies turn to zoom or microsoft teams for video conferencing calls.

Both services have free options to try it out, but offer more features when you start paying a monthly fee.

And of course, you can always just pick up the phone and make a call.

In san francisco, i'm kara tsuboi with cnet for cbs news.

Kids are stuck at home and between school work and entertainment much of their time is in front of screens.

Tom hanson looks at some toys that can help them unplug.

Parents looking to keep kids occupied..

And stimulate their minds..

Can turn to hands-on toys that incorporate science and technology.

"activity toys ar great for making sure kids are busy and engaged for long periods of time, we don't want to hear 'i'm bored' especially when parents are trying to get work done."

Marisa dibartolo is the editor in chief at the toy insider.

She says knex lets kids construct their own creations.

"coding critters.

Coding critters teaches children the basics.

They use arrows to do simple programing and direct the dog to perform a task.

"it's important t have some things on hand that can give kids a real tactile, learning experience."

The learning friends book teaches kids one hundred words "panda, penguin" in both english and spanish.

"spell level a spell oven."

And if you want to go old school, the speak and spell is still around with the same 80's design.

"you can teach kid up to 200 commonly misspelled words."

Latch hook kept past generations occupied and now those kits are back.

Kids can follow the designs to make a mini rug.

Pac man..

The arcade classic..

Has been reborn in board game form - "you have fou players playing together as the ghosts and one person playing as pac man."

The table top game can give the entire family a chance to unplug.

As the coronavirus outbreak sweeps the world and the nation, a group of volunteers in oklahoma is stepping up to help get groceries for people in need.

It's just one example of how the kindness of strangers is helping people impacted by the virus across the country.

Nancy chen reports.

Hi!

So i'm on a grocery run for a couple of members in our network.

Sarah noble is on a mission -- the oklahoma teacher is volunteering to pick up food for a complete stranger -- isolated because of the coronavirus.

Our member needs paper towels and you can see the shelves are pretty empty.

//she needs apple juice.

It's the work of the oklahoma grocery network -- a facebook group created by angie buchan...connec ting people unable to leave their homes with good samaritans in the community.

I think that this gives us a sense of control and being able to do something for someone aside from ourselves so it makes not feel so helpless and overwhelmed.

-nats- random acts of kindness -- from singing to lift spirits..

To sewing face masks -- are catching on in the midst of the pandemic.

It gives us a great project to do.

We can help our nurses and keep ourselves busy.

As restaurant owners deliver food to healthcare workers... -nats/sot- brought you something for lunch.

...rene malloy has been visiting neighbors ..

From a distance..

Who are afraid and confined to their homes.

We walk up and down and talk to each other across the street.

People nowadays don't even know who their neighbors are.

While the virus has separated communities..buch an says its given her new hope.

People are really giving and really generous if they just see the need.

She says despite social distancing, the cris is bringing people closer together by bringing out the best in humanity.

Nancy chen cbs news new york.

We know a lot you are doing thoughtful things for your friends and family.

You're doing great things for people you don't even know.

We would love to share that kindness.

Drop us a line on the mid morning facebook page so we can say thanks from everyone in the community.

When we come back, we're going to move with beth and whitney from the fitness factor.

Mid it's time to get up and get moving.

While we are spending more time at home, whitney brown and beth jeffers are sharing workouts that we can all do at home.

Here's the latest.

Whitney brown: hello and welcome to get fit.

I'm whitney brown here with beth jeffers and fitness factor, bringing you a cardio circuit that you can do for all levels.

So if you're looking to get a quick workout in at home, this is exactly what you need.

This is simply cardio, strictly cardio, and you can find all of these workouts and videos available at wcbi.com or on our fitness factor facebook page.

Whitney brown: so let's get started.

We are going to do 30 seconds of work and 30 seconds of rest, which means you work really hard for 30 seconds or at your level and then you rest and do nothing for 30 seconds.

You're going to have 10 exercises that you're going to go through either one block, two blocks, or three blocks, depending on how long you'd like your workout to be, making sure that you rest as need and pick the modifications that are appropriate for you.

So after our warmup, you're going to warm up first for about five to eight minutes.

Let's show you those 10 exercises.

Whitney brown: we're going to start off with a march, a march in place.

If you'd like to make it harder, you can make it a little bit more of a jog, and then into high knees, if you'd like to make it harder still.

From there, you're going to go to knee up and arm out, and you can add a hop.

So she's making it a little more challenging, or a low-impact version is take the hop out altogether.

So a tick tock or a heel out, a little aerobics move.

See?

Yeah, that's right.

And you can make that a little bit more intense if you'd like or you can slow it down.

Whitney brown: now we're going to go into a kick forward is the next exercise.

So she's just letting that leg go, taking her arms and swinging them.

Again, adding that hop if you'd like to make it more challenging.

From there, we're going to go to jumping jacks or a heel jack, so she's going to take her arms overhead as she takes one or both legs out, jumping to make it more intense.

All right, heisman, you ready?

Beth jeffers: mm-hmm .

Whitney brown: a little heisman steps.

So it's step, yeah, step touch, or you can make it more intense by speeding it up, but you're moving laterally.

From there, we're going to skip in place.

So we're going to skip there.

If you have an open space or some area at home, you can actually go into moving, skipping, which is totally fine.

You just work with the place wherever you are.

So the next thing we're going to do is in, in, out out.

So she's going to take her feet out and in, working on a little bit of quickness here.

That's right.

Good job.

Whitney brown: and then mambo.

We've got two more exercises for you, so she's going to step and then change directions forward and back.

Perfect.

And finally, fake jump rope.

Yep, exactly.

We're going to skip a little bit of a rope.

Perfect.

Or you can double jump there, if you'd like.

Now remember, you're alternating.

Good job, that was good.

Are you winded.

Beth jeffers: i'm exhausted.

Whitney brown: you're going to work for 30 seconds and you're going to rest for 30 seconds, so there's plenty of rest time there.

After you do your one, two or three rounds, you're going to take about five to eight minutes and cool down.

And you can refer to our stretch series that we also have at wcbi.com as a nice way to kind of wind up your workout.

So thanks for tuning in.

We hope that you're staying fit while you're home.

Announcer: for more get fit with the fitness factor, go to wcbi.com.

Up next.

Tom eble assembles a panel of former wcbi sports directors.

Memories gogone b everyone loves a reunion.

So we were happy when wcbi sports director tom eble reached out to a few of our former sports directors for a visit.

Here's tom with robby donoho, derek cody, chris latimer, mark rogers and will kohlmeyer.

Pkg "if you coul define your your time, wcbi, you know, what were some of the biggest things that happened during your time.

Two things and one wasn't necessarily a time defing moment.

But it's a moment that still impacts me today.

And that is when states are point guard from the final four run.

Marcus bullard got sentenced to the penitentiary.

And we went down to gulfport to cover that.

So here you have a team fresh off the final four.

And all of a sudden richard williams, the head coach is on the witness stand, really pleading for marcus bullard not to go to prison.

And it didn't work.

The judge sentenced him to a really hard time being in that environment and seeing how serious that was and how somber that was and the stakes that were involved.

One of the reasons i chose to make a career turn and and go be a lawyer.

So that really stands out in my mind.

The other thing, just from a big story standpoint was the 1999 us women's open house.

By old waverly, waverly hosted that event, and there was a huge ramp up to that event.

And wc bi just went all out for it.

And they did sunrise on set out there, midday out there, five and six out there, mark and i were out there, it felt like 20 hours a day, that whole time and, and to see that event be planned for for six months in advance and then culminate during that week in west point, mississippi.

That was really cool.

Chris with that second story brought up yes, and some some definite memories.

Because covering golf at that level was something that i had not experienced prior to that.

So that was a whole new experience a learning curve in regards to how do we cover this event because it's more about the area and the pride of hosting a major championship than it is just about covering the golf itself.

So that so that was that was intriguing as well.

So yeah, that that comes to mind.

Definitely as a learning experience i came in or i was there during a really weird time.

And the reason i say that is because twitter didn't start catching on until late oh, wait no nine.

And i actually remember the day i signed up for twitter in december of oh, wait.

And that kind of leads to you know, another moment that i had and this involves will actually, the day that sylvester chrome got fired.

We're still somewhat before social media at that point.

And i think it might have been the only store that was actually able to break.

We broke into programming to say that sylvester croom had been let go, or resign.

I'm sorry.

And i remember calling will that friday, like what do i do?

I don't know how to handle this.

You know what kind give me an idea of how you would how you would do this thing.

That was difficult.

And then we i started using twitter a couple of weeks later during the coaching search because there was a friday night and i believe it was the first friday in december, where someone from a station in jackson, incorrectly reported that chris peterson had been signed to a four year contract.

And i saw that on twitter and went on live at six and said, look, this is a statement from boise state right here saying he hasn't signed anything.

And then a week later they hired dan mullen.

I remember to this day i went home for dinner.

Obviously my wife.

Now we live together at the time in columbus.

So i went home for dinner.

And then the hugh freeze thing came down.

Was one of the biggest moment my wife we talked about to this day, i sat down for dinner, and i went i had go and like the plate was still sitting on my table and it was just like i had to go.

You bring up the story on new freeze.

I was sitting on the train leaving the chicago cubs game at the time on my basically my summer vacation and when that happened i looked down at my phone and i other entities and i have still never said ever again to this day.

But at that moment i was like oh my gosh, what am i gonna do so immediately i called you we try to get everything together.

I will say to this day, i'm really glad i was not in columbus for that and you had to deal with everything regarding that because it's the the toxicity that came from it.

The the negativity, just everything that came down on ole miss.

And from from hugh freeze regarding that is something that i mean, i will never forget.

I still remember after that.

The big story that came out that i was the first one to break was jeffrey simmons being on video, punching that woman i was the first to get that video.

I was the first to put out that story.

I've been wrote that story when it happened.

That was a national story.

Um, i still remember when that happened.

Like, you had to tread very cautiously because jeffrey and i actually became pretty good friends when he was a football player at noxubee county.

And to this day, not everyone is going to fully understand everything that went through it because once you kind of rip open that band aid again, you kind of expose that wound again, and then you have everyone who has an opinion wanting to bring their opinion into that situation.

So i don't think anyone ever is ever going to fully comprehend everything that transpired with jeffrey simmons, but i think we see how great he is now with the titans and how he really reshaped his image and how he became such an incredible young man when he was at mississippi state."
