Father suffered from low blood sugar

Children are learning a lot these days while at home with their parents during this pandemic.

And as news channel two's gary liberatore shows us a nine-year-old boy's 'life lesson'...can teach us all...a lesson.

Tc : 11:35 "this has got to be time that youll never forget right?

Yeah&" the mullins...a family of four in new hartford have been spending a lot of time together, like most families these days....and on monday night...9- year-old burke was sleeping with dad...while mom was sleeping with his 11- year-old sister quinn in the master room... tc : 07:56 "is is this normal that you get to have like one of these sleepovers with dad every now and then.

Yeah every now and then& " only this time...burke noticed his dad had fallen asleep...but was sweating pretty badly... tc : 07:24 "my dad was very sweaty so then i woke him up and i told him to test.

So i grabbed his testing kit downstairs and then he was at like 39 and i got him some juice and i put a little sugar in it and i gave it to him."

Dad's blood sugar had dropped all the way down to 35... tc : 09:42 "i was somewhat with it, but not totally with it.

So i have to give him a lot of credit.

He knew what to do."

Tc : 08:37 "he has seen stuff from my wife, when my wife has taken care of it for me in the past so, like i said, hes very astute."

Steve's blood sugar was up to 89 within 15 minutes.

Tc : 13:14 "have you ever had this happen before where i got that low?

Oh yeah, ive actually been lower, unfortunately my blood sugar at one time got down to 12.

Oh my goodness.

I had paramedics, edwards ambulance was here and they were able to resuscitate me.

And what causes it to go that low.

Obviously youre probably doing the right things anyway right?

Yeah, diabetes is like a triangle tight rope, its maintaining diet with taking the right amount of blood sugar with also eating the right amount of food.

So it couldve been something that i did during the day that set it off that couldve dropped it more during the night so i might not of eaten enough or i couldve taken a little bit more insulin."

At 9-years-old, burke knows he wants to play professional baseball...but besides a keen eye for the baseball field...he also has a keen eye for the health care field.

Tc : 11:10 "he couldve very easily save my life because blood sugar can drop rapidly and if he hadnt gotten me up and woke me up at the time he did, i mean i could very well be dead."

Tc : 10:09 "what does this say to families out there about having conversations with someone in the family that has diabetes.

Its always very good to get everybody involved, kids, other family members get everybody involved, let them know what you have, give them the signs for what could be low blood sugar and how to react accordingly."

And burke's tip for kids who have a parent with diabetes... tc : 14:50 "you have to know what they do children are learning a lot these days while
