After the Syrian government ordered the closure of all shops as a part of measures to curb the spread of the new coronavirus, Syrian tailor Hussam Issa offered his services to a group making personal protective equipment for hospitals.

David Doyle reports.

At his Damascus atelier, Hussam Issa has gone from sewing glittering gowns to medical ones.

After the Syrian government ordered all shops shut as a part of lockdown measures, Issa offered his services to the Saed group - a non-profit that produces and sells personal protective equipment, such as gowns and masks, at a low cost to hospitals.

He says it's a way to help out, while still earning a living to support his family.

Saed group says they produce 200 gowns and 6000 masks daily.

The price of such equipment shot up a month ago, and Saed group says they sell to hospitals at half price.
