Russia: Giant new military cathedral to remove Putin mosaics

Russia has completed the construction of a giant military cathedral erected to celebrate the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany.

The church sparked controversy after it emerged some mosaics were depicting President Vladimir Putin and other Russian leaders, including Joseph Stalin.

The Kremlin has now asked for the Putin mosaics to be dismantled, with a spokesperson saying that celebrating the Russian President's achievements was “premature”.

The Orthodox Main Cathedral of the Russian Armed Forces was built in 598 days, with a total cost of around 6bn rubles ($82m).
