Watch why ex-captain of India's wheelchair team now works as a labourer

The Covid pandemic has changed the lives of thousands across the country and among the worst hit are India's sportspersons.

One such is Rajendra Singh Dhami, former captain of India's wheelchair cricket team.

The man who won many accolades on the cricket field is now forced to work as a labourer in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand.

Dhami says that he has appealed to the government several times for help, but nothing concrete has come out of it.

Dhami said he is working as a labourer under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act scheme to sustain his family and sought help from people amid the Covid pandemic.

District magistrate of Pithoragarh, Dr Vijay Kumar Jogdande, reacted to his appeal and said the authorities have asked the district sports officer to provide him financial aid at the earliest.

The DM also said that Dhami would be given benefits under Mukhyamantri Swarojgar Yojana and other schemes so that he is able to earn a livelihood in the future.
