Beirut Explosion: Before And After Satellite Images Show Extent Of Devastation

These satellite images show the extent of the devastation caused by the Beirut explosion.

The images, captured by WorldView-2 by European Space Imaging were taken on August 5th, the day after the explosion, in order to assess the damage to the surrounding blast site.

In one after photo an image shows a huge crater where a warehouse once stood.

In another a cruise ship has been overturned and four tankers damaged.

When disaster strikes, VHR satellite imagery can provide critical information for emergency relief operations to evaluate the extent of damage and get an entire overview of the scene.

More than 200 people are believed to have been killed by the explosion in the Lebanese capital, its governor has said.
